Today is the 29th National Children’s Book Day
and I thought I would celebrate with a giveaway sponsored by my favorite local publisher
– Tahanan Books!
The first book we ever read by Tahanan was Jose Rizal’s “The Monkey and the Turtle,” the exact same book being commemorated by the National Children’s Book Day every third Tuesday of July, the reason for being of this annual celebration! I just found out about it (like right now!) when I googled about the celebration. Isn’t it amazing?
We then received as a gift the funny and endearing “Ay
Naku!” written by Tahanan big boss Reni Roxas. Told in only 65 Filipino words, this
book had my daughter exclaiming "ay naku!"
over every little thing for several days. This is a must-have for those who
want their young children to start appreciating the Filipino language.
Another gift we received was Tagu-Taguan, a counting book in Filipino by my favorite Filipino author and illustrator Jomike Tejido. Told in rhyme, little
ones will have fun counting the beautifully drawn critters. This is definitely a superior alternative to other
counting books in the market.
And then, I discovered The Chair King and used the story of
a chair-loving giant to teach my daughter a bit about our country’s history and
Independence Day. I shared our unit study in a blog post and was amazed by the feedback
I got.
Needless to say, our experiences with Tahanan Books were
always wonderful and made me want to take a closer look. What I saw excited me
very much: picture books of the highest quality, in content and appearance, which
I find comparable to the classic American picture books we are reading at home.
Some may find the books a bit pricey compared to other
Filipino-authored children’s books out there, but the books are worth it! Let me tell you why.
Works of Art
The art work of the books we’ve read, including the ones I
gushed about above, are just FANTASTIC. A book’s illustration is one of
the things that should be considered when buying a book. Beautifully
illustrated books can elevate a child’s taste in art. Some of the Tahanan books
I just fell in love with have paintings for illustrations, such as The Mats,
Bahay Kubo, and The Quarreling Kites - all available at Shop@The Learning Basket. :D
Very Filipino
Though most of the books published by Tahanan are written in
English, their books are very Filipino, with universal appeal. When a childhood
friend, who resides in Australia ,
asked me for Philippine children’s books, Tahanan books were the first on the
list I sent her. The books, both written in Filipino and English, give the reader a sense of the Philippines through the stories and illustrations.
Excellent Quality
Just take a look at one of their books and you will see how different it is from other local children's books. It is on a level all its own, from the stories, words used, art work, and clean layout.
The excellence of every Tahanan book that we have read convinced me that Filipino parents must know about the publishing house and to make its books available to as many people as possible through our online bookshop.
